Asparagus officinalis
ASPARAGUS – CONNOVER’S COLOSSAL is a perennial plant of Mediterranean origin from 1873, that grows to 150cm high with rich green stems and purple tops. It takes three years to produce edible spears from seed, but it lasts 20 years once established. When transplanting you chose the thicker male stems which are stronger. The Female plants produce poisonous red berries. It yields 10 spears over 8 weeks in a year and grows best in places with cold winters.
Plant in early Spring after the last frost in light well drained friable mulched soil. Cut old fronds back in winter when it dies off and transplant root crowns. Soil should be well manured and fertilised. Do not plant in an old bed previously used for asparagus to prevent disease. Space 20 to 30 cm apart, 1 to 2 cm deep in a sunny area or partial shade. Add lime if soil is too acidic. If soil is too hard, cultivate several times or plant in raised garden beds and keep weed free. Eat raw or cooked
