Cichorium intybus
CHICORY-TREVISO RED The classic Italian Radicchio. Upright with red & white striped leaves with large pure white stems. Plant anytime for baby leaves for salad. Radicchio is a member of the chicory family & part of the dandelion group. Chicories are thought to help with digestion of rich foods. Many people are familiar with radicchio & chicory as an autumn/winter veg, but their cool season tolerance makes them ideal for spring planting as well, either starting the seedlings inside & transplanting once soil temperatures are above 7 – 10°C, or just direct sowing when the soil is above 10°C. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination. This plant grows best in rich soil but also adapts well to poor soil.
