How to Grow Spring Onion White Lisbon

  1. Begin with heritage or heirloom seeds if possible, as these are often more flavorful and hardy.
  2. Choose a sunny location as they prefer full sun, but they can also tolerate some shade.
  3. Make sure the soil is well-draining and rich in organic matter.
  4. Plant seeds directly into the soil, about 1cm (0.4 inches) deep, and 2.5cm (1 inch) apart. If planting in rows, space them 15-20cm (6-8 inches) apart.
  5. Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply once a week, or more often if the weather is particularly hot or dry.
  6. Thin the seedlings once they have emerged, to give them more room to grow. Space them 5-7.5cm (2-3 inches) apart.
  7. Spring onions don’t require a lot of fertiliser, but a balanced fertiliser can help promote growth. Apply a slow-release fertiliser once a month.
  8. Harvest when they are about 15cm (6 inches) tall. Simply pull them out of the ground, or use a sharp knife to cut them off at the base.

Additional Growing Tips

  • Interplanting Benefits: White Lisbon spring onions make excellent companion plants. They naturally deter pests like carrot fly and aphids, making them a great border crop around carrots, lettuce, and beetroot.
  • Succession Sowing Strategy: To maintain a steady harvest, sow a small patch every 3–4 weeks. Unlike some veggies, spring onions don’t take up much room, so you can tuck them into empty spots throughout your garden.
  • Cold Tolerance Surprise: Despite being called “spring” onions, White Lisbon can tolerate light frosts and are often overwintered in mild climates. Sow in autumn and mulch well — you may get an earlier spring crop than expected.
  • Regrow from Kitchen Scraps: Don’t throw away the base of your store-bought or homegrown spring onions. If the white part with roots is intact, you can place it in water or soil and regrow it multiple times.
  • Go for the Greens: If you snip just the green tops with scissors instead of pulling the whole plant, it will often regrow. This allows you to harvest the same plant multiple times.
  • Boost Flavour with Stress: Allowing a little “controlled stress” — such as reducing watering slightly before harvest — can intensify flavour. Just don’t overdo it, or you’ll get tough stalks.
  • Soil Rotation Helps: Spring onions are susceptible to soil-borne diseases if planted in the same spot year after year. Rotate with legumes or leafy greens to keep soil healthy.
  • Harvest Timing Trick: For milder flavour, harvest early in the morning when the oils that make onions pungent are at their lowest concentration. If you like a stronger bite, harvest later in the day.
  • Seed Storage Insight: If you’re saving seed, note that spring onion seeds have a relatively short shelf life — usually only 1–2 years. Store in a cool, dry place and test germination rates if using older seed.

Heritage of Spring Onion White Lisbon

White Lisbon has been cultivated for centuries and renowned for its reliability, mild flavour, and rapid growth. It likely originated in Europe — possibly Portugal, as the name “Lisbon” suggests — and became widely grown in Britain by the 1700s. It was a staple in traditional cottage gardens, valued not just for flavour but also for its ability to grow in cooler seasons and poorer soils.

By the 1800s, White Lisbon had spread throughout Europe and into North America, where it was included in early seed catalogues and embraced by home gardeners. It was especially popular for its dual-purpose use: harvested young as spring onions, or left to mature into small bulbing onions in warmer climates.

While its exact lineage is difficult to trace (as is common with many long-standing vegetable varieties), White Lisbon is thought to be one of the foundational types from which many modern bunching onions were developed. It remains a favourite in heirloom gardening circles due to its open-pollinated nature, which allows gardeners to save seeds and maintain the line year after year.
