Cucurbita pepo
PUMPKIN-NANTUCKET LONG PIE Also known as Nantucket Pie Pumpkin. This variety dates back to at least 1832 when it was grown in Maine. The 2 – 3.5 kg fruits are picked any time after they begin to change color to orange; they will ripen successfully in storage. Makes the most amazing pies! One of the absolute best pie pumpkins for cooking, with virtually stringless, smooth orange flesh. Harvest green with an orange spot on the bottom, as Long Pie, ripen in storage, turning completely orange outside as flesh sweetens inside. A remarkable pumpkin.
Sow seed directly into the garden. Plant in a sunny location in rich, well-drained soil. Keep fairly well watered & fertilize monthly, but avoid constant overwatering & continual use of high-nitrogen fertilizers. For continued harvest, pick fruit regularly when young.
