How to Grow All Seasons Carrots

  1. Choose a location with deep, loose, well-draining soil, free of rocks or debris.
Amend soil with well-rotted compost or aged manure a few weeks before planting, avoiding fresh manure to prevent forking.
  2. Aim for a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.5 for optimal growth.
  3. Sow seeds directly into the garden bed, spacing them thinly in rows about 5 – 30 cm (12 inches) apart.
Cover seeds lightly with fine soil or compost and water gently.
  4. Keep the soil evenly moist during the 10–20 day germination period.
To speed up germination, cover rows with a wooden board or damp burlap cloth, removing it once seedlings emerge.
  5. Water consistently to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry spells.
Avoid uneven watering, as this can cause cracking in the roots.
  6. Thin the seedlings to about 5 – 8cm (2–3 inches) apart once they reach 5.5cm (2 inches) tall to ensure proper root development.
Be careful not to disturb the roots of nearby seedlings when thinning.
  7. Plant in an area that gets 6–8 hours of sunlight daily.
Carrots grow best in temperatures between 13–24°C (55–75°F). In hot climates, provide partial shade during the hottest parts of the day.
  8. Fertilise with a balanced fertiliser before planting and side-dress once carrots are about 10 cm (4 inches) tall.
Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, as they promote leafy growth at the expense of roots.
  9. Protect against pests by using fine mesh row covers to prevent carrot rust flies and aphids.
Companion plant carrots with onions or leeks to deter pests naturally.
  10. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weeds.
Ensure the tops of developing roots remain covered with soil or mulch to prevent green shoulders.
  11. Harvest carrots after 70–80 days when they reach about 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
For sweeter carrots, leave them in the ground for a few frosty nights but harvest before the soil freezes.
  12. Succession plant every 3 weeks during the growing season for a continuous supply of carrots.

Additional Growing Tips

  • Soil Preparation: Use loose soil free of rocks or debris, as these can cause the roots to split or grow misshapen.
Adding well-rotted compost or aged manure a few weeks before planting improves soil structure. Avoid fresh manure, as it can lead to forking.
If your soil is heavy clay, consider growing All Seasons Carrot in raised beds or containers to allow for better root development.
  • Optimal Sowing Techniques: Carrot seeds germinate slowly, taking 10–20 days, so sow seeds thinly to avoid excessive thinning later.
Covering the rows with a wooden board or damp burlap retains moisture and prevents crusting of the soil.
  • Watering Insights: Irregular watering can lead to cracking in the roots so water consistently but avoid waterlogging
Using a drip irrigation system helps deliver water directly to the root zone while keeping foliage dry and reducing disease risks.
  • Companion Plant:  Onions or leeks can deter carrot flies as these crops release strong scents that confuse the pests.
Avoid planting carrots near dill or fennel, as these herbs can stunt carrot growth.
  • Thinning and Spacing:  Thin seedlings to about 5-8cm (2–3 inches) apart once they reach 5cm (2 inches) in height. Crowded carrots will compete for nutrients and result in smaller roots.    Avoid disturbing the roots of nearby seedlings during thinning; disturbed carrots may grow twisted.
  • Temperature and Light:   Ensure they receive 6–8 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth.  In hotter regions, partial shade during the hottest part of the day can prevent stress.
  • Pest and Disease Management:  Watch out for carrot rust flies and aphids. Using fine mesh row covers and practice crop rotation to reduce the risk of soil-borne diseases like root rot or powdery mildew.
  • Mulching for Healthier Roots:  Mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and prevent weeds.
As carrots grow, ensure the tops of the roots remain covered with soil or mulch to prevent green shoulders, which occur when exposed to sunlight.
  • Harvesting and Storage Tips:  To check readiness, gently loosen soil around a root and pull it up. If it’s about 20 cm (8 inches) long, it’s ready.
For a sweeter flavor, leave carrots in the ground after the first frost but ensure they’re harvested before the ground freezes solid.
After harvesting, store carrots in slightly damp sand or sawdust in a cool, dark place to extend freshness.
  • Unique Growing Trait:  All Seasons Carrot can be “succession planted” every 3 weeks for continuous harvesting throughout the growing season. Its ability to thrive across a range of climates and its forgiving nature make it a great crop for those experimenting with different planting times to optimize yield.

Heritage of All Seasons Carrot

The All Seasons Carrot is a versatile variety with origins deeply rooted in traditional European carrot cultivation. This heirloom variety is believed to have been developed to meet the needs of growers seeking reliable harvests throughout multiple growing seasons, particularly in regions with temperate climates. Its lineage can be traced back to the orange carrots first cultivated in the Netherlands during the 16th and 17th centuries, when the now-familiar orange pigment became popular. Over time, the All Seasons variety was selected and bred for its adaptability to diverse soils and climates, making it a staple crop in Australia, Europe, and North America. Its ability to produce consistent yields in spring, summer, and fall reflects its long-standing association with resilience and practicality. Today, All Seasons Carrots remain a favorite for both commercial growers and home gardeners, carrying forward a legacy of dependability, nutrition, and flavor
