RADISH – WATERMELON-SHINREMEI
The Watermelon radish, also known as Roseheart or Red Meat, is an heirloom Chinese Daikon radish. It originated in China, where they are called Shinrimei which means ‘Beauty in the Heart’ A large round root vegetable with a crisp texture & a mild to sweet peppery flavour. Unlike many other radishes, the intensity of this radish lessens as it matures. The flesh is hotter toward the outside & sweeter toward the centre. Growing to approx 7.5cm in diametre, it displays a white outer skin at the top with green shoulders & a pink base that covers a bright red to magenta inner flesh. This amazing Chinese heirloom radish produces large roots.
Sow at regular intervals from early spring to early summer & also early Autumn. Radishes grow well in most soils, but prefer rich, moist free draining soils. Sow very thinly into well cultivated soil. Thin out seedlings to 3-5cm apart.
