Brassica oleracea
BROCCOLI-BROCCOLETTI – sometimes called Cabbage flower or Italian Asparagus, was used by Romans from the early 1700’s. Likes soil rich and well-watered. Sow anytime to ensure harvest during cooler months, doesn’t do best in hot weather. Frost hardy. Despite its Italian name this vegetable was first developed in Japan. The entire plant is consumable, including the occasional yellow flower. Common cooking methods include sautéing, steaming, boiling & stir frying. Its flavour is sweet, with notes of both broccoli and asparagus, but it is not related to the latter. Nutritionally, it is high in vitamin C & contains vitamin A, calcium, folate, & iron.
