How to Grow Honeydew-Green Flesh-Melon
- Sow in spring after the last frost when soil has warmed, or start earlier in pots in cooler areas.
- Locate in a sunny position with full sun and good air circulation.
- Soil should be rich, well-drained and improved with compost or well-rotted manure.
- Sowing Depth of 15–20mm deep directly into the garden or in pots.
- Space plants 80–100cm apart, allowing room for vines to spread.
- Water consistently to keep soil moist but not waterlogged, especially during flowering and fruiting.
- Feed with a balanced fertiliser regularly; avoid excess nitrogen which promotes leaves over fruit.
- Support on a trellis to save space and improve airflow or allow it to trail on the ground to grow.
- Pollination by bees are essential for pollination; encourage them for better fruit set.
- Harvest when fthe ruit develops a slight softness at the blossom end and gives off a sweet aroma.
Additional growing tips for Honeydew-Green Flesh-Melon
- Fruits don’t “slip” off the vine like rockmelon – timing harvest is more about aroma and feel than the stem.
- Too much water close to harvest can dilute sweetness – reduce watering slightly as fruit ripens.
- Place straw, cardboard, or mulch under fruit to prevent rot and improve cleanliness.
- Honeydew prefers slightly drier conditions than cucumbers – overwatering can reduce flavour.
- Pinching off excess growing tips can help direct energy into fewer, larger fruits.
- Each plant will only successfully mature a limited number of melons – don’t expect every flower to fruit.
- Fruits continue to sweeten slightly after picking, but only if harvested close to ripe.
- Cool nights can slow sugar development – best flavour comes from consistently warm conditions.
- Misshapen fruit is often due to incomplete pollination, not a plant problem.
- Avoid overhead watering late in the day to reduce risk of mildew on leaves.
